Freedom fighters seek quota for kin

Freedom fighters of the state on Saturday demanded one per cent reservation for their children in the education sector and revision of their allowance.

BHUBANESWAR: Freedom fighters of the state on Saturday demanded one per cent reservation for their children in the education sector and revision of their allowance. State government gives monthly pension of Rs 5,000 to each freedom fighter while the Centre give them Rs 19,000 each.

Hundreds of senior citizens, who took part in freedom struggle, from the state and outside assembled at the Freedom Fighters' Day Mahotsav here.

"Salary of MPs and MLAs is being hiked frequently but the allowance of freedom fighters has not been revised for years. Children of those, who fought for the nation, should get reservation in higher and technical education as the children of those served in armed forces are getting reservation," said president of All India Freedom Fighters' Samiti N R Mathod.

The freedom fighters of the state also demanded pension for their unmarried daughters and sons with learning difficulties. "Since unmarried girls and sons with learning difficulties are dependants, government should provide them pension after our death," said Bhabani Charan Patnaik, a 92-year-old freedom fighter.

There are around 1,000 freedom fighters, who are receiving pension from the Centre and state government, official sources said. Of whom, 260 get pension from the Centre. The state government has made provision of free treatment of the freedom fighters in government hospitals.

Chief minister Naveen Patnaik said the state government is aware of the contribution of freedom fighters and had launched programmes and schemes for them and will continue to do so in future as well.
